Monday, May 25th, 2009Eco-friendly Bikes
Monday, May 25th, 2009A Sheffield Hallam University student has developed an eco-friendly bicycle. The cheapest mode of transportation a cardboard bicycle. Interestingly, this 21-year old student has developed an ultimate green machine using cardboard, which is the cheapest material to build a mode of transportation. The industrial packaging cardboard costs around £3 for making the frame work and the total cost in putting the wheels and chain would come out to be £15. Hence, the eco-friendly bicycle may sell for as little as £15. The advantage behind this is of course it is eco-friendly and for such a low valve it would be an attractive proposition for occasional cyclists and would become a less of the target for the thieves.

Glaucoma Leading Cause For Blindness
Thursday, May 21st, 2009Glaucoma is the leading cause for blindness. It is caused by increasing intraocular pressure which causes damage to the optic nerve that transmits visual information to the brain. It does not have any visible symptoms though in acute cases it includes blurry vision, halos around lights, eye pain, nausea and vomiting. Statistics reveal that about 4.8 lakh patients in India and about 1.2 lakhs new cases add up every year. At present 63% blindness is due to cataract, 4% is due to glaucoma. The sad thing is that India has just 12,000 ophthalmologists and needs about 40,000 optometrists of which only 8,000 are there. Such statistics reveal that more awareness is needed among the people.
India’s social structure on HIV and AIDS
Thursday, May 21st, 2009We have been discussing this for long now but the problem still remains the same. In India women are at a much higher risk of falling prey to HIV/AIDS than men because while having sex a woman’s body has more sections exposed to the HIV virus then men. Moreover there is a larger virus present in sperm than in vaginal secretions. In India the society is male dominated and women are depended on men financial and even emotionally thus allowing the men to control their lives and the right as to when, with whom and in what circumstance they will have sex. While in cities the sex workers are aware of the consequences and reasons for HIV/AIDS, women in villages or small towns who are sex workers are more ignorant and are falling prey to HIV/AIDS. At time in villages even housewives are forced to sell themselves to survive. Rapes also make women prey to HIV/AIDS. More over women buying condoms and saying no to sex is not taken in the right way in the Indian Society.
